History
The English Department was established
in 1997 with a two-year undergraduate program admitting its
first group of students from among 5-year junior college graduates.
The two-year program, equivalent to the junior and senior years
at the regular university, provides a chance for graduates from
junior college to extend their education to a higher level.
The Department has been growing steadily with the conscientious
work of the faculty and students. In 1999, much to its credit,
the Department was commissioned by the Ministry of Education
to undertake a training program for elementary school English
language teachers island-wide.
In 2000 the master's program was established. With emphasis
on language application and research, it was one of the first
of its kind among the universities of science and technology.
Starting academic year 2003, the Department expanded to include
a full four-year undergraduate program to meet the increasing
needs of graduates from vocational high schools. In less than
two decades’ time, the Department has turned out many graduates
who have achieved distinction in academia and such fields as
education, commerce, and industry.
